Latin squares and related experimental designs

چکیده

A Latin square is an arrangement of v copies of v symbols into a v× v square so that (i) each symbol occurs once in each row, and (ii) each symbol occurs once in each column. Three distinct Latin squares of order v = 4 are shown in Example 1. Other than for small v, the number of distinct (non-identical as matrices) Latin squares is not generally known, though it is known that it grows rapidly with v. For v = 3 the number of distinct Latin squares is 12, for v = 7 is greater than 6.1× 10, and for v = 11 is greater than 7.7× 10; see Laywine and Mullen (1998, chapter 1).

Optimal and efficient semi-Latin squares

Let n and k be integers, with n > 1 and k > 0. An (n × n)/k semi-Latin square S is an n × n array, whose entries (called blocks) are k-element subsets of a set of size nk, the set of symbols of S, such that each symbol of S occurs exactly once in each row and exactly once in each column of S. Semi-Latin squares form a class of designs generalising Latin squares, and have applications in areas i...

New quasi-symmetric designs constructed using mutually orthogonal Latin squares and Hadamard matrices

Using Hadamard matrices and mutually orthogonal Latin squares, we construct two new quasi-symmetric designs, with parameters 2 − (66, 30, 29) and 2− (78, 36, 30). These are the first examples of quasisymmetric designs with these parameters. The parameters belong to the families 2− (2u2−u, u2−u, u2−u−1) and 2− (2u2 +u, u2, u2−u) which are related to Hadamard parameters. The designs correspond to...

The Challenge of Generating Spatially Balanced Scientific Experiment Designs

The development of the theory and construction of combinatorial designs originated with the work of Euler on Latin squares. A Latin square on symbols is an matrix ( is the order of the Latin square), in which each symbol occurs precisely once in each row and in each column. Several interesting research questions posed by Euler with respect to Latin squares, namely regarding orthogonality proper...

Specifying Latin Square Problems in Propositional Logic

This chapter discusses how to specify various Latin squares so that their existence can be eeciently decided by computer programs. The computer programs considered here are so-called general-purpose model generation programs (or simply model generators) that are used to solve constraint satisfaction problems in AI, to prove theorems in nite domains, or to produce counterexamples to false conjec...

Statistical Approaches in Analysis of Variance: from Random Arrangements to Latin Square Experimental Design

Background: The choices of experimental design as well as of statistical analysis are of huge importance in field experiments. These are necessary to be correctly in order to obtain the best possible precision of the results. The random arrangements, randomized blocks and Latin square designs were reviewed and analyzed from the statistical perspective of error analysis. Material and Method: Ran...
